The Westminster Confession of Faith, 20.1Christ has purchased for believers under the gospel freedom from the guilt of sin, from the condemning wrath of God, and from the curse of the moral law. Those who think that, by rejecting religion and faith in God, they are somehow “free” are altogether deluded. They are not free from God’s judgment, and they will not be free to decline His wrath. They are not free from the pains of death, and they are not free to live a holy, righteous, and good life in the Spirit of God. They are, rather, slaves to sin, bound over to wrath, and living all their days in the fear of death (Heb. 2.15). Only those who have come to redemption through faith in Jesus Christ know that now, in Christ, there is no condemnation, no guilt, and no need to fear the wrath of God. Now they are free of such lingering threats to live full and abundant lives to the praise of the glory of God’s grace. For when the Son of God sets men free, they are truly free, indeed! Read John 8.31-36: What did Jesus mean by saying that those listening to him were not free? How does He set us free? Psalm 107.1-3 Tune: Faithfulness – “Great is Thy Faithfulness”
